Guest Lecture: Phosphoenix
Dear Idunaar,
The Board is organising a (free) guest lecture given by Bert Monna, the CTO & co-founder of the company Phosphoenix. You might know this company already if you've attended the BME Meet & Greet! However, below is a short description about Phosphoenix.
What is Phosphoenix?
Phosphoenix is developing a brain implant to restore vision in blind people. Phosphoenix is a spinoff of the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience in Amsterdam. By targeting the LGN, a part deep in the brain, and penetrating this part by a large number of electrodes (>1000), it should be possible to provide a perception of the outside world. The footage of a camera on glasses is – in real time – analysed by an AI-system, to determine the most important aspects in the scene. This information is then converted into stimulation patterns to drive the electrodes. The full system is under development by Phosphoenix, which requires expertise in materials science, manufacturing, electronics, systems engineering, software engineering, AI-processing, as well as knowledge on the functioning of the visual system in humans.
Practical information
This guest lecture will take place on the 10th of March, from 14:00-16:00 in 5173.0141 LB. Snacks, tea and coffee will be provided! Sign ups are already open!
