For international students

What is a study association?

A study association is an association for students who follow a specific study program, for GLV Idun this means students of Biology, Biomedical Engineering, and Life Science & Technology. The association has multiple purposes for its members; support in education, organizing social events, providing insights into future career paths, etc. The members of a study association are characterized by their study program, contrary to a student association in which the members' study program is not relevant. Joining a study association gives an extra dimension to your student life in Groningen! Note: As a study association new members do not have to take part in a hazing (ontgroening in Dutch).

What is GLV Idun?

The studies Biology, Biomedical Engineering and Life, Science & Technology are part of one study association, which is the “Groninger Levenswetenschappen Vereniging” (Groninger Life Science Association) Idun, in short, GLV Idun. Our association consists of 19 committees, all of which organize different activities. Some organize study-related activities like lectures or a congress. Others organize career-related activities like workshops, company visits, or lunch lectures. Lastly, some committees of course also organize social activities for the needed relaxation. There are monthly parties, annual galas, multiple national and foreign excursions, several sports events and there is an annual play for and by our members.

How can I become a member of GLV Idun?

To become a member of GLV Idun you need to sign a form. You can find this form under the tab ‘Become a member’. You only pay around €18,50 a year for a membership. This amount of money will be deducted from your account through a direct debit.
Members of our association can order their study books at a reduced price. This discount can easily get towards 15% from the advised selling price. That means you have earned your contribution back! Besides that, you can buy a cheap lab coat and lab goggles from us, which are mandatory for laboratory courses.
Our members also get free access to all our parties and social drinks, they can read our digital magazine or get one of the physical copies and they get a free copy of our annual almanac. For all activities which have an entrance fee, our members pay a reduced price in comparison to guests.

Can I become part of a committee?
That is possible! All committees have applications at the beginning of the academic year and most committees have a second round of applications later in the academic year. Information about the applications can be found in our Facebook group. If you have a question for one of the committees, you can always send them an e-mail. Their e-mail addresses can be found here.
